The World Technovation Challenge holds every year in the famous Silicon Valley, San Franscisco, USA. 115 participant countries send in their representatives to contest for the gold medal. Contestants are required to identify problems in their country and develop applications to solve them.
Promise Nnalue, Jessica Osita, Nwabuaku Ossai, Adaeze Onuigbo and Vivian Okoye, students of Regina Pacis Secondary School, Onitsha, represented Nigeria recently at the competition. The five youngsters, ages 12-14, won the gold medal for Nigeria, defeating contestants from techy countries such as China, Spain and the host, USA. These five young brilliant minds, led by the school director, Reverend Father Vincent Ezeaka and Mrs Uchenna Ugwu, developed a demo app called the FD-Detector. A mobile app for detecting fake drugs. They have been given permission to produce the app.
The fight against fake drugs is one for which the late Dora Akunyili almost got assassinated and is reknowned globally. Hence, the reason why the five Nigerian inventors are fondly called, The Five Young Doras.
